Mistbelt Forest & Grassland Birding Tour

Join us for a full-day birding adventure through the richly biodiverse mistbelt forests and highland grasslands of the Southern Drakensberg region.

We depart early from Himeville, arriving at the forest just outside Underberg at first light — the ideal time to experience the awakening of this enchanting ecosystem. The mistbelt forest offers the chance to spot several iconic species, including:

  • Orange Ground Thrush
  • Cape Parrot
  • Knysna Turaco
  • Olive Bush-Shrike
  • Grey Cuckoo-Shrike
  • And a host of other forest dwellers

From here, the tour continues into the surrounding grasslands, known for their high conservation value and excellent birding. This region is one of the few in South Africa where you may encounter all three crane species — with the endangered Wattled Crane being a key target.

Other grassland highlights include:

  • Blue Swallow – this threatened species breeds in montane grassland.
  • Denham’s Bustard – often seen displaying in spring (especially during September)
  • Yellow-breasted Pipit – a tricky but rewarding find in short natural grasslands near wetlands
  • Black-winged Lapwing – typically seen in recently burnt fields or along firebreaks

Alongside the birds, you’ll also enjoy scenic views, seasonal wildflowers, and the quiet beauty of this pristine landscape. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a nature lover, this tour is designed to offer an easy going paceexpert guidance, and a memorable day outdoors.
