Endemic Birding Tour – Sani Pass
A full-day, high-altitude birding tour for serious birders.
Departing at +- 05:00 from Himeville, this expertly guided 4×4 tour takes you up the Sani Pass, through the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg World Heritage Site and into Lesotho, reaching altitudes of over 2,800m. The summer months (Sept – Feb) are the best.
The Sani Pass is a national birding hotspot, home to an exceptional range of Southern African endemics, making it one of the most rewarding one-day birding destinations in the country. The tour is carefully timed and paced to target key species in each habitat zone, from scrub and grasslands to Protea slopes and alpine plateaus.
Highlights include:
- Barratt’s Warbler, Drakensberg Rockjumper, Ground Woodpecker, Drakensberg Siskin, Gurney’s Sugarbird, Fairy Flycatcher, and the rare Mountain Pipit, among many others.
- A complete change in habitat and birdlife as we cross into Lesotho, with chances to see Southern Bald Ibis, Bearded Vulture, and Sickle-winged Chat.
A light packed lunch is included. Please bring your passport, refreshments, and a good pair of binoculars — this is birding at its best.
Expect an intense but deeply rewarding day, returning to Himeville by +- 18:00.
